The Standard Model of Particles

All of the particles described by the standard model are indivisible. They're the smallest pieces of matter and energy that can exist. Even if there were no muons in the universe right now, the laws of physics tell us what we have to do to make one. There's a finite list of ways that energy can appear in nature. And each of those is what we call a particle species or a particle type or a particle.
