The Egyptians are believed to be the first ones to domesticate the African wild cat. Some phylogenetic evidence suggests cats were around even earlier in West Asia, the Near East. There was a find in Cyprus even earlier where cats were found buried together with humans. It's hard to tell too far back, but both regions of the world love their cats.
