There was a better sort of global consensus 20, 30 years ago about the upside of globalization. But now there is pushback against it from politicians on both the left and right. There are two major threats: suspicion of free trade and what it does to domestic production. The belief that somehow a country gets rich by protecting its markets rather than engaging in a competitive environment. And then you had covid, and a whole new set of arguments related to producing masks for pandemics.
