During the us. Civil war, about 11 thousand, 200 cases of mumps were reported during the first year and over 13 thousand 400 in the second. The estimate for some military populations was as high as six thousand cases per 100 thousand individuals. Mumps also ran rampant during rold war too, with the surgeon general of the us. Public health service stating in 19 forty that it was one of the most disabling of the acute infections among armed forces recruits. And i feel like a lot of people who were born after the mumps vaccine already existed, maybe just didn't realize how widespread it was. It was just sort of an inevitability, almost of childhood.
