The Importance of Correlation and Causation

I think people radically misunderstand how difficult it is to demonstrate causation. Observational studies are useful, but they don't tell you the kind of people who get cancer take up smoking. Most people just look at the observational study and jump to whatever conclusion they like. It's because they're not willing to do the careful, expensive, painstaking scientific work.
