Marxist State Theory has a tenuous relationship to what we're calling the South African tradition. In some ways, there was kind of a dialogue back and forth between academy and activist circles. I think it's also one of the things that helped to make South Africa a really dynamic intellectual place is because of this dialogue with activist groupings and academics.
