Each season Patrick worked on a hotshot crew. He told himself next year I'll get a real job. But every fall when fire season ended he just couldn't bring himself to apply to work in an office. Today the US has about 470 smoke jumpers in the west and those are split between seven four service bases and two Bureau of Land Management bases.
