After a habit has been established, you can do it good enough on an auto pilot. You stop paying attention to whether you're doing it as well as you could or your little errors and mistakes. So at this point you need like a return to awareness. And steve martin did a great job of this as he expanded his comedy routine. He had some success associated with the process but he was always expanding to the next level.
