How Much Storage Is Better Than 60% Wind?
The model uses 24 gigawatts and 120 gigawatt hours of storage to rearrange that solar and wind generation to match demand. Then if there's any shortfalls, it uses existing hydro. And we're very lucky in Australia that our existing hydro is highly dispatchable,. which means you can just switch it on and off as required. It can supply 7 or 8% of typical NEM demand. So I guess that's one of the goals of my simulation is to show we can get very close to 100% renewables just with that wind, solar storage and existing hydro but also give an idea of how much of a shortfall is.
