CNN's John Sutter says democracy depends on the ability to persuade each other. He argues that for most of human history, people have been ruled by a strong centralized authority. The U.S. tried an alternative system in the 1700s and it has since become more widespread across the world. But now we've gone back to how humans used to be governed, he says: through talking.
