The Problem With Generalization in AI

I like Alan Kay's dictum that the best way to predict the future is to invent it. How long it takes is not set by a law of nature. It depends entirely on our creativity. We can do things that look like great generalization but in fact they don't. Once you move a little bit out of that comfort zone of the system it just falls flat very badly. You have to remember that what we're doing in this process and we can't do it indefinitely is that we are covering up for our lack of generalization by having massive amounts of data. The Swiss cheese is in trillions of dimensions so it's almost all still cheese.
