Lactansius places charity at the core of ethics, another idea that will be embraced by Augustine. He develops his view in part by attacking the radical skeptical philosopher Carnéides. Lactansius: We become charitable in order to imitate God and his mercy. If we are virtuous, we will achieve the promised immortality in the hereafter.
