I was brought in for a trial as an expert witness on cults and belief systems. The defence attorney wanted to argue that his client kind of got suckered into this cult. He didn't pay taxes for like 15 years, and they finally cut up with him. It goes back to the same motivating a factors as flat earthright? Someone is selling you the truth that you already want to believe. And so if you hear it from like, enough authoritative voices, you start to believe it.

Since 2015, there has been a spectacular boom in a nearly 200-year-old delusion — the idea that we all live on a flat plane, under a solid dome, ringed by an impossible wall of ice. It is the ultimate in conspiracy theories, a wholesale rejection of everything we know to be true about the world in which we live. Where did this idea come from
