The Importance of Race in the 19th Century

19th century thinkers saw the working class as being anthropologically and biologically distinct. It wasn't a metaphor they used, they actually believed that these were distinct races. So much of 19th century discussion is about how class differences are really racial differences. The presence of inequality gives rise to race as an explanation for that inequality in societies that have proclaimed themselves to be equal.
