Is There a Connection Between Serotonin and Depression?
There are still major gaps in puzzles that raise questions as to exactly how to understand this relationship. It's not the case that serotonin is a direct cause of depression, because the timelines don't match up and also the levels of analysis don't really make sense. You can't identify or in a simple way reduce a very complex phenomenon such as depression to the actions of a single neurotransmitter.
