The Stalking Character of Attila the Hun in Christian Hagiographies
The tradition of 11 thousand virgin martyrs almost certainly grew out of a mistranslation of an already fabricated story. In the twelfth century, a mass grave was discovered near the basilica in cologne. The bones were collected and used to decorate the cathedral's so called golden chamber. But what's most important for our examination is how easily attila the hun was incorporated into this tradition.
