The Evolution of the Death Penalty

In places where resources are scarce versus available, are they more or less likely to have the death penalty? And we thought that resources would be related to this. We were interested in whether there might be an evolved inclination to prefer elimination focus punishments when resources are scarce. When resources are scarce, keeping around someone you shouldn't is the more costly error. So we don't want to make it and so we're more willing to eliminate the individual.
