People all around Martinique were shaken by what sounded like cannon fire. Gaston Landis could see that the misidentification of artillery fire was only half wrong. Water flowed down from the mountaintop, although it had not been raining. It caused local rivers to swell and flood. The water carried volcanic boulders and burnt trees down into villages.
