There were no standard form of words corresponding to an exchange of vows. The ceremonies all emphasized the fundamental nature of the transition in which the bride was involved. By being veiled, the bride was converted into a non-person in her old home so that she could be reborn as a married woman in the new one. A lot of her initial experience must have involved grieving for her former life and fear of the unknown.
