It's interesting to remember that a guy like George Kennan, who was a great strategist on questions like this, was a critic of NSC68. It's incredible how often in U.S. history the dissenting voices are vindicated, but since nobody reported on them in the first place, there's no need to go apologize to these people. The economist Kenneth Bolding, I have a quote in the book where he's talking about the war economy and he refers to it as a cancer, a cancer on American society. And once you unleash this economic monster, it's not going to just stay where you put it. It doesn't stay small. It is self-extending
