The key to hacking the phone system was reproducing a tone of 2,600 Hz. The freaks could trick a remote switching machine into thinking the call had been disconnected. From there, they could make long distance calls and disguise themselves as toll-free numbers or directory assistance. Unfortunately, technological advancements didn't translate to higher quality calls.
