In 1897, a British scientist used an electric and magnetic field to study subatomic particles. He found that the mass of these particles was about 2,000 times smaller than the lightest known atom at the time - hydrogen. This indicates to Thomson that what he's actually discovered are subatomic particles, things that make up atoms.
