The Bike Is a Practical Technology

In the 19 fifties and sixties, global production of bicycles and cars was about the same. But as you get into the seventies, the eighties, the nineties, bicycles leave cars in the dust. The bike is incredibly practical technology - it's always been used no matter how much competition there was for the car. And i think that tells us something fundamental about technologys. It's not just a case of, o, you had this technology, then a better technology comes and thn you get rid of the old technology. That's rarely how it works, and it has certainly not worked with transport.
