The Gulf of Sidra: A Military Confrontation
Gaddafi spent an increasing amount of time trying to differentiate between revolutionary violence, which he supported openly. The United States in 1979 put Libya on its inaugural list of state sponsors of terrorism. In the 1981 Gulf of Sidra incident, US and Libyan planes clashed over the Mediterranean. There remains a sense of unfinished business.
