When we've reached the fiscal tipping point, and the federal government is no longer able to spend on credit, all the deficit spending and debt Congress has been shrugging off comes crashing down. The people in 2055 wind up paying the bill for the preceding 40 years plus interest. Crippling austerity measures? Or Draconian tax hikes? Neither of which will be very popular with the American populace.
