The Great Famine and the Immigrants
By 18 51, the famine had already transformed the irish landscape. In parts of road island, entire communities had disappeared. The population of er that's the northwest corner of county mayo, stood at over 26 and a half thousand in 18 forty one by 18 51, it had fallen by over 25 percent. And then a slow, steady decline through immigration set in. Unlike other immigrant populations, these people and their descendants continued to play an important role in irish life. Remittances money sent back to ireland were sent to the economy of many irish households right into the twentieth century. Many remained bitter, feeling they had been forced from their homeland by british government policies
