A lot of the villains in her books are men and they are villains because of their treatment of women. She's very good at making them charming and interesting and then pulling the rug out from under you. Willoughby is more interesting because he actually was going to propose to Mary Ann, who is Eleanor's younger sister. It takes a lot to be this sexy, ruffian bad boy. Dare I even say a feminist choice?
