Marxism was always supposed to be a theory of the a contradictions of capitalism. And underneath it, or implied in it, was an expectation that these contradictions would sooner rather than later, overwhelm capitalism. The question became for marxists, why did the what appeared to be a growing instability of capitalism suddenly morf into an abiding stability? What causes that? That became the puzzle. So if the class structure is failing to undermine capitalism, we have to look at what is stabilizing it. and that is something outside the class structure. It's culture, its ideology.
