The Importance of Imagination in Record Production

Wilson was, without a doubt, one of the great record producers of the 1960s. He could at times be one of the most imaginative and innovative. But he was only creative when working with musicians who didn't know what they wanted. This time though, it was not because Wilson took charge of the record and changed it, but because he didn't take charge. The job of the producer is much the same one that Andy Warhol had performed on the Velvet's first sessions - to get out of the way for the artists.
