People have latched on to that literal interpretation that Victorian men thought organs were getting ripped out of bodies. In the 1860s and 1870s, train travel became way more ubiquitous. Engineers had apparently been worried about everything from suffocating when they went through tunnels to fainting in exhaust fumes.
