Archaeologists used touch to determine the sex toy was a dildos. The object had been thrown away in rubbish, but that didn't really help them decide what it was. It came down to kind of what we would call wear marks, the evidence of fiction. But as I'm sure you know, there's no the human finger is extremely sensitive to surface variation.
