What Are the Barriers for Black Women to Training Abroad?

A lot of black male physicians in the mid-1800s went abroad to get training. Dr. Janssen-Cune Smith, who was the first African-American to get a medical degree, went to school in Edinburgh. But they did not accept any women for more than 50 years after that. "Beyond that financial barrier, these schools are just not even accepting any women," she says.
