What Are the Alternatives to Market Driven Democracy?

I'm searching for a broader philosophical underpinning system in the absence of a market driven one, a market driven democracy. I do think we need a principle that goes beyond equality of opportunity. No one should be held back due to unfair disadvantages or to prejudice. We also need to figure out how to cultivate a common life if we really believe in democracy. It's not enough simply to think of ourselves as consumers, we also have to make it possible to thinking of ourselves as citizens.
