The Catholic Church and the Bishop of Rome
There was a uniform acknowledgement of this in various ways in the first millennium of Christianity. Many fathers of the church very clearly assert Ambrose, for instance, and Cyprian of Carthage that the office of the papacy assures unity in the church. And then finally at the council of Calcedon, so this council met in 451. The judgment of the Bishop of Rome is definitive and absolute for the universal church.
