The Seventh Cholera Pandemic

Plasmes are circles of dianda found in bacteria that are separate from their own genoes. They can be small, carrying only a couple of gens, or much bigger. Sharing plasmids is one way that bacteria can acquire new genes and potentially new abilities. But they're rare in strains of the seventh cholera pandemic. Researchers have been unable to find out why - until now. Microbologist melony blockash has identified two defence systems that appear to work in a different way than those used before. She says this could help control invasive insect species.
