What I've Learned in Critical Care
In critical care, we identify life-threatening conditions that are characterized by a compromise in oxygen delivery to organs. We improve heart rate, stroke volume, contractility, deal with preload, manage afterload, and increase oxygen content and hemoglobin. That's fundamentally what we do. And it started in the 60s with traditional cardiopulmonary resuscitation and mechanical ventilation then evolved to all other forms of life-sustaining or life-supportive therapy.
