The Gospels also reveal the extent of the failure, the rebellion, the sin of Israel. The Pharisees and scribes are not just moralists; they've totally perverted the Old Testament. And once you see that, then you can also recognize what Jesus is doing behind the scenes. They're trying to kill him. Of course, they're going to kill their Messiah. But at the same time, in his teaching, he's restoring a proper understanding of the law. He's restoring the proper understanding of history of Israel where it was intended to go.
