The last little hole in that region of importance is the duct that goes to the middle ear. If you get an upper respiratory tract infection, particularly bad in children, that can block off that tube. And then middle ear infection, which causes a lot of pain for children. Any time you've got a hole leading from the external to the internal, often you have tonsilles there.
