The so called books of ours, which i'm sure you've all seen pictures of from communal italy, are extremely rare. The only copy i have ever found, and i found it just recently, is in the fisher library at the university of toronto. It is fourteenth century, and belonged to a very rich female italian penitent, sa yanonymous. They used little pamphlets full of prayers, collects, litanies and so forth, not a cut down version of the divine office. Those who could not sound out the latin text said potheirs.
