The idea that the government should bese making these kinds of decisions has been realely controversial over the as 50 years or so. But around 19 70, idea arose that we now call neo liberalism. It was a much more marked fundamentalist idea, promulgated by economists like milton friedman and before that, friedric hayak. And the idea ere was that actually the government should keep its hands off of the economy,. Instead, the market itself was going to know what was best for people.
