Many officers thought his appointment to the role of big dog was a bit of a joke. They saw him as too short, too young, too inexperienced, too badly groomed. He would have known that everyone he commanded didn't think much of him. And this happened in may tenth, which was about a month after being appointed. His weary forces came to the bridge of lody. Despite this uphill struggle with the troops, he had the austrian in retreat but they had to take the bridge.
