The Importance of Sacrifice in the Gospels

Moses is typifying. the work of Christ, at least as he's constantly mediating on behalf of these cranky and sinful folks. The Lord responds to the wickedness of Israel in chapter 14 with more grace that he is going to fulfill his promise. And then we find the same thing here in number 16. Why is it that these people are not consumed by God's wrath? It's because they have a mediator who intercedes for them and they have a high priest who offers sacrifice for them.
