The Importance of Human Rights
St. Thomas Aquinas did not produce a theory of human rights, but his moral and political thought contained the materials out of which a better theory can be constructed. The protections they afford human persons against the terrible power wielded by modern states is too important. But unlike some of those who have noted these problems, I do not believe the remedy is to repudiate the notion of natural or human rights.
