Maritocracy seemed to be a way to a more equal society and more just society. But affluent parents have figured out how to pass their privilege on to their children. It's by equipping them with the opportunities, through adolescent years, to compete successfully for admission to top universities. So part of the problem is what seemed an alternative to hereditary privilege has amplicated it.
