I followed this inquiry into what happened on this terrible day, 1972 and 14 people were killed on the streets of British city by British troops. And I discovered that all these people who just not been able to do anything, and there was nothing heroic you could do came up with weird little lies like this. There's a very interesting book by Daniel Shactor from Harvard called The Seven Sins of Memory. If you're ever in the middle of a really horrible thing and you survive it, you have to come up with a version of it which shows yourself in a better light for yourself.
