Making Something From Scratch

The word "scratch" has a very, very literal origin. It just refers to a line scratched in the ground to mark the starting point of a race. The original image was runners, and you also see something similar in boxing. There is a version of it that was used in New England and mostly Maine around the turn of the last century for a house cleaning party.
