The British eventually, they deal with the the Barbary pirates by just paying them an annual tribute. I mean, Barbary poor says you're dealing with a phenomenon that goes back at least 400 years. You can already see the rulers of these North African statelets getting active at sea around 1400. And elsewhere in the Mediterranean, when does slavery effectively die out to all intents?
