The History of the Commonwealth
The commonwealth is really the descendant, if you will, from the old imperial meetings of prime ministers from the major territories of the british empire. It was a very small and select group that had been given, if you like, priorty treatment by the British government. And it was those few states, like australia and that were given self government that were early members of what became known as the commonwealth of nations. But 19 forty nine is, of course, a crucial moment in the history of the commonwealth, because it's the time when two important things happen.
