The Just War Tradition
In order for a war to be just, it has to be a defensive war. Thomas Aquinas doesn't make an explicit distinction between defensive and offensive war. Even if you think about self-defense, you don't necessarily have to wait until the other guy is beating you to a pulp before you fight back. And then finally, the final prudential criteria was the idea of prospect of success.
