The Overproduction of Purple Hearts in the Pacific
The Army was the acquiring agency for, I guess, all metals for the US military in World War II. The question of additional Purple Hearts arose in context of what would be the likely American casualties in a vent that we had to take the Japanese home islands. It's still considered a controversial subject, but the Army analysts looked at the casualty rates in regard to territory seized.
